Forest Where Connections Are Woven Welcome to Madoka no Mori

The word “En” in Madoka carries the spirit of “en,” a cherished bond or connection,
while “Mori” reflects our deep reverence for the forest.
Here at Madoka no Mori, people meet, hearts connect, and meaningful encounters blossom.
It is these connections that we hold most dear.
Surrounding Madoka no Mori is a vast, majestic forest,
born from trees deeply rooted in the earth, nurtured over time.
Here you will find the joy of living with nature, the joy of living as part of nature.
This is a place where the essential elements of life come together with tranquility.
Each day, quietly and gently, new stories are spun in the forest of Hakone.
Here, a sense of fullness, as if what was once missing has found its place.
Here you will find a sense of wholeness, as though something has come full circle.
To us, that is the essence of true richness.

Greetings

With the hope of creating meaningful connections and welcoming our guests with a warm and generous spirit, we opened Madoka no Mori in 2014.
The name embodies both en—the bonds of connection—and maru, the circle that symbolizes harmony and wholeness.
As a ryokan rooted in Japan’s traditional culture, we aspire to remain a place where people can feel genuine warmth through human connection.
Through heartfelt hospitality, we strive to create a space where each guest may feel at ease and truly relaxed.
Guided by these values, we welcome every guest with sincere appreciation.
Within our ryokan, we have devoted ourselves to the use of fine wood, with all rooms featuring traditional tatami flooring. Two natural hot spring sources flow directly from the grounds, and our cuisine is prepared using carefully selected ingredients sourced from across Japan.
In addition, we are steadily advancing initiatives to address environmental challenges such as climate change and global warming.
With deep gratitude for the blessings of the land, the environment that allows us to enjoy hot springs, the ever-changing beauty of Hakone’s four seasons, and above all, for everyone who supports us, we remain committed to contributing to the local community.
We will continue our efforts to create a ryokan that guests will choose time and again.

A Turning Point Toward Environmental Responsibility

In the past, we operated three ryokan: Madoka no Mori, Gora Hanaougi, and Sounkaku.
Sounkaku was a long-established ryokan that first opened in 1925. Blessed with high-quality hot springs, the building had undergone numerous renovations over the years while preserving a sense of nostalgic charm. It was beloved by many guests, some of whom returned time and again.
However, in October 2019, severe rainfall caused devastating flooding and landslides, forcing the ryokan to close its doors.
This experience became a turning point for us—prompting a deep awareness of environmental challenges such as natural disasters and climate change.
Since then, we have taken steady steps toward sustainability: introducing the world’s first hydrogen-powered cooking equipment that produces no CO₂ emissions, reducing plastic waste generated within our facilities, and implementing initiatives to minimize food loss.
Though each effort may be modest, we are committed to advancing environmentally conscious practices within the unique framework of a ryokan, doing what we can—one step at a time.

Pioneering a New Definition of Green Luxury

Luxury, we believe, is found not only in elegant guest rooms, refined facilities, or attentive service. True luxury is also the peace of mind that comes from knowing your stay supports the planet. With this deeply held belief, one of our key initiatives in this pursuit is decarbonization.
We now offer meals prepared using hydrogen-powered cooking—a method that produces no carbon emissions, yet delivers exquisite taste. Our goal is to provide our guests with both a luxurious experience and the opportunity to engage with a more sustainable way of travel.
Ten years from now. Twenty years from now. Even a hundred years from now—may the forests of Hakone remain ever abundant, the seasons of Japan ever vivid, and our Earth ever beautiful.
Step by step, we continue doing what we can as a ryokan, striving to become a place ever more beloved by our guests: Madoka no Mori.
