A Gift from Living Mountains A Serendipitous Encounter with Twin Springs

Since ancient times, the hot springs of Hakone have been cherished as places of healing—toji, or therapeutic bathing retreats.
Among the many renowned hot springs in the Hakone volcanic mountain range, which are counted as seven, eight, seventeen, or even twenty hot springs, Gora no Yu, the hot waters of Gora, is the one that springs from the highest peak.
At Madoka no Mori, we are blessed with access to two privately-owned hot spring sources (jika-gensen): one feeds the open-air baths in each guest suite, and the other feeds our communal bathing area.
The spring water, drawn from a volcanic crater known as Sōun Jigoku (Sōun Hell), is a unique sulfate-rich mineral blend combined with volcanic elements. It contains high levels of sulfate and carbonate ions, which keep the skin supple and hydrated long after you leave the bath.
Immerse yourself in this powerful yet gentle water, and you may find that the noise of daily life fades away until all that remains is the silent music of the surrounding forest.
This water, warmed deep beneath the earth since ancient times, is more than a bath—it is a quiet miracle, a moment of timeless connection between the human spirit and the mountain’s breath.
We invite you to experience not only the physical benefits of the spring, but also the deeper sense of healing it brings—a retreat for both body and soul.

The History of Our Two Private Hot Spring Sources

The hot springs of Hakone, including those at Madoka no Mori, are deeply intertwined with the region’s geology. The area’s richly varied volcanic terrain is rare among Japanese hot spring destinations, giving rise to a wide variety of springs from Hakone-Yumoto to Owakudani. It is said that the Hakone volcano was formed around 400,000 years ago. Long before that, this land lay beneath the deep ocean. Over the course of its long and profound history, repeated activity of the Pacific Plate heated seawater trapped underground through magma chambers reaching temperatures of approximately 1,000°C, sending these waters gushing forth to the present day.
The two private hot spring sources at Madoka no Mori are both colorless and transparent, and may at first appear identical. Yet they differ in temperature, mineral composition, and texture. Notably, the hot spring water supplied to the open-air baths in every guest room emerges at a searing 91.1°C—carefully tempered with water to ensure a comfortable bathing temperature. This is truly a gift from the “fire mountain,” available to guests in a continuous flow directly from the source.
Even in Hakone, however, newly tapping a hot spring source is extremely difficult. Over time, these two private springs have become increasingly precious. We hope that you will enjoy the healing waters while reflecting on their deep and captivating story.
